It turns out Alexa Grasso will be out for a while, after undergoing surgery on her right hand.
The UFC flyweight world champion suffered a fracture in her last fight against Valentina Shevchenko, held on September 16.
The injury went unnoticed by the fighter herself, but the persistent pain in the area finally forced the doctors to act.
"In the fight I fractured my hand," she revealed, posting on Instagram
"We are used to not letting pain stop us in anything and, although it hurt, I did not think it was serious until I wanted to return to training and I realized that my hand was still very bad.
"The surgery was a success, so thank you very much Doctor Arroyo and Doctor Zarate.
"You are angels! I fully trust my health in their hands and I know I will be mega ready for that trilogy."
Controversial result in the second Grasso vs Shevchenko fight
The result of the recent fight between Alexa Grasso and Shevchenko was shrouded in controversy after UFC president Dana White claimed that one of the judges in the bout had given an incorrect score in his assessments.
Grasso retained her flyweight title, but everyone was baffled by the 10-8 fifth round scorecard given by Bell, a member of the panel, to Shevchenko.
Interestingly, the Kyrgyzstan fighter also had to undergo surgery on her hand after the bout. The continuation of the trilogy will have to wait until both are fully recovered. It will likely happen sometime during 2024.
In the meantime, fans will be waiting to see how one of the UFC's biggest rivalries of the moment ends. For now, Grasso must rest her hand in a cast before beginning rehab.
